Avelo Airlines Marks Highest US Airline On-Time Performance & Lowest Cancelations In May

Avelo Airlines recorded an on-time performance (OTP) of almost 88% in May, as well as the lowest cancelation rate in the US, placing it at the top of the table for US carriers for the second month running.

The low-cost carrier continued its fine operational form with an OTP rate of 87.6% in May, achieving higher operational reliability than any other US airline, as per data from Anuvu. On-time performance is defined as flights arriving at their intended destination within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time.

Avelo’s OTP was considerably higher than the industry average of 72.5% and a distance ahead of the country’s second most reliable carrier, Delta Air Lines, which achieved an OTP of 80%.

Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO, Andrew Levy, commented,

The airline also managed to maintain the lowest flight cancelation rate of any US airline in May at 0.13% – of its 1,504 scheduled flights last month, the carrier canceled just two. This is one-third of the cancelations achieved by second-placed airline JetBlue, which canceled 0.39% of its schedule in May, and a long way ahead of the industry average of 1.4%.

Most on-time in the US this year

Avelo’s overall OTP rate was 84% for the first five months of 2024, narrowly ahead of Delta’s 83.1% during the same period. Delta was the US’ most on-time airline in 2023, with an OTP of 83.1%, edging out second-placed Avelo, which recorded 82.8% of its flights on time.

Avelo also ranks as the second-best airline in the country for cancelations, with 0.27% of flights canceled so far in 2024 – only Sun Country has achieved a better rate, at 0.25%. Avelo was way out in front in this metric in 2023 having canceled just 0.18% of its schedule for the year, with Alaska Airlines coming in second at 0.71%.

Growth continues

The airline has announced 11 new destinations and 16 routes to launch this year, taking its total network to 53 destinations across 24 US states (plus Puerto Rico). Five of the carrier’s new destinations are due to launch in the next six weeks in Houston, Lakeland, St Louis, Traverse City and Washington, DC.

Having operated its first flight in April 2021, the carrier has now served 4.7 million passengers in its three years-plus of operations, utilizing an all-Boeing 737NG fleet. It also recently accomplished its first-ever profitable quarter during Q4 2023, so things are undoubtedly looking up for Avelo.
