American Airlines’ Top US-Mexico Routes

American Airlines operates numerous flights to Mexico, but only 10 routes have over 90 rotations. American Airlines serves around 28 destinations across Mexico—these include both leisure destinations like Cancun and non-leisure destinations (such as Querétaro). The top destination is Cancun, which has three routes with more than 90 rotations (even though American Airlines reduced Cancun service from some hubs).

American Airlines is not only one of the top legacy American carriers, but it is also one of the key players in the Mexican market. As of August 2024, these are the ten American Airlines routes to Mexico with more than 90 rotations, according to information provided by Cirium (an aviation analytics company).

American Airlines Dallas-Fort Worth

Dallas-Fort Worth is one of the busiest airports in the world and the sixth-busiest international gateway to the United States (New York’s JFK is number one). Dallas-Fort Worth is the leading American Airlines hub (the airline has 10 hubs across the US). American Airlines is also headquartered there.

A day of American Airlines operations at Dallas-Fort Worth is a busy affair. On January 26th, the airline operated non-stop flights to/from 216 destinations. This included 171 domestic airports across 45 states and territories. Of the 1,588 scheduled movements (take-offs and landings combined), 1,418 were domestic movements, making up 89% of the carrier’s total. This was more than Delta’s 1563 movements at Atlanta for the same day. By some measures (like scheduled passenger transport), American Airlines is the largest airline in the world.

American Airlines flights to Cancun

​​​​​Eight out of the ten American Airlines’ routes to Mexico, with more than 90 rotations, originate from Dallas-Forth Worth International Airport (the other two originate from Miami and Charlotte). The route with the most seats is Dallas to Cancun with 34,332 seats per month. This route also has the highest number of operations (186).

American Airlines operates three flights to Cancun with 90+ rotations. Two of these flights are comparatively long distances, being over 1,000 miles. Charlotte Douglas International Airport to Cancun tops the list at 1,041 miles, while Dallas-Fort Worth to Cancun is only marginally shorter at 1,029 miles. Miami to Cancun is around half the distance at 531 miles.

Cancun is a tropical beach resort destination in Mexico’s stunning Yucatán Peninsula. Here, holidaymakers can also explore the many stunning Mayan ruins (including the pyramids) and the famous cenote sinkholes. Being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Western Hemisphere, many airlines operate out of Cancun (including many seasonal flights). Most major US-based airlines fly to Cancun, and the airport receives flights from as far away as Europe.

American Airlines flies to Cancun from Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago-O’Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami, NY-JFK, Philadelphia, and Phoenix year-round. Additionally, it operates seasonal flights from Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, and St. Louis.

American Airlines flights to Mexico City/Central Mexico

Mexico City is located in the center of Mexico and is, therefore, typically a much shorter flight than Cancun in the south. Despite beginning as the largest metropolis in North America, American Airlines has only one flight with more than 90 rotations (also from Dallas-Fort Worth).

American Airlines also operates flights with a high rotation to the cities of Guadalajara and Queretaro in the central region of Mexico (both with an identical number of seats – 15,824). Additionally, AA operates some 97 flights to the Pacific Coast city of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

American Airlines Baja California/other destinations

Monterrey, Los Cabos, and Chihuahua are the three busiest American Airlines destinations across northern Mexico. Monterrey International Airport is located in northern Mexico, not far from Texas, and this route is served by the AA’s regional airline, American Eagle with only 76 seats.

Chihuahua (not to be confused with the little doggy) is Mexico’s largest state (and borders New Mexico and Texas). American Eagle also operates this route, and the flight offers only 65 seats, making it the smallest capacity aircraft on this list.

Los Cabos is one of the top leisure destinations in Mexico and is famous for its beaches, sharks, whales, and other attractions. It is also one of the top holiday destinations in Mexico for Americans. It is one of the longer routes from Dallas (1,023 miles) and has almost 20,000 seats (giving it a much higher capacity than Monterrey and Chihuahua).
