While airlines are often in the news for things like fleet acquisitions, mergers, new routes, and other business-related decisions, sometimes moments captured on phones on airplanes can also go viral. Something similar is happening with India’s largest airline, IndiGo, which is in the news due to a video of one of its passengers serving tea onboard.
Video goes viral
A video is doing the rounds online showing two men onboard an IndiGo aircraft serving tea. While the details of the flight are not available, it seems that a few passengers are having a light-hearted moment as they stroll down the aisle serving tea from what looks like a personal tea flask.
The aircraft was presumably on the ground as the overhead bins were still open, and the entire act reminds one of a usual practice at Indian railways in which tea vendors hop onto train compartments to serve fresh tea in clay cups.
The internet, however, is divided on this. Some are applauding the two men for bringing joy to passengers at a time when air travel can be particularly stressful. Some even said that it was a generous deed, considering how expensive it can be to purchase onboard meals on low-cost carriers.
But some were also quick to observe how the two men managed to get tea onboard when security only allows a minuscule amount of liquid on airplanes. It’s likely that they may have filled the flask after passing through security at one of the many eating outlets at the airport, but we’re only guessing given the lack of information. Simple Flying has contacted IndiGo for a comment on this.
Other viral moments on airplanes
Airlines in India and around the world are no strangers to viral moments; IndiGo itself has had a few in recent times. A few months ago, a video of a woman proposing to her boyfriend on an IndiGo plane went viral. The lady, named Aishwarya Bansal, walked down the aisle, got on one knee, and proposed.
Another viral moment came earlier this year on another IndiGo flight when an artist shared a video of her interaction with a flight attendant, which ended with her sketching the cabin crew member’s portrait on a piece of paper.

In the United States, an American Airlines pilot went viral in 2023 after giving an emotional speech following his retirement after serving the airline for 32 years. Captain Jeff Fell came out of the cockpit to make an announcement on his retirement flight from Fort Meyer’s Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

Coming back to IndiGo, the airline has been in the news lately for some major business-related decisions. The carrier has been gradually tweaking some of its core strategies, including offering a business class product on some airplanes.
In October, it received its first Airbus A321neo with a business class cabin featuring a 2-2 configuration and a special dining option for passengers. Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers, commented,
“IndiGo is embarking on a new path of its incredible growth story by introducing a tailor-made business product on the nation’s busiest and business routes. With India’s soaring economy and the evolving aspirations of the Indian society, we believe it’s time for IndiGo to redefine business class in India, increasing availability of this service for the nation.
