A steady stream of good EV charging news has been coming in lately in the US. This one is for new fast chargers at 26 businesses in Wisconsin. The $14 million in funding is from federally funded grants.

‘“WisDOT is pleased to help offer drivers reliable and convenient places to stop, so they can feel comfortable making a trip across the state and have the opportunity to support local businesses along the way,” said State Department of Transportation Secretary Kristina Boardman.

The new EV fast chargers will be located at 11 Kwik Trips, hotels, gas stations, a chocolate shop, and a Culver’s. Exactly how many new fast-charging ports will be installed was not stated in the source. A similar project at a gas station that recently came online has 4 charging ports. In this particular case, with 26 business sites, it suggests there might be about 26 to 104, depending on how many ports are installed at each business site.

I just wrote an article about 4 new fast chargers being installed in the northern part of the state, in Rhinelander. With the latest funding round, it sounds like multiple dozens more could be installed. Again, though, we don’t know the exact total.

Some people might not think the installation of a small number of new EV chargers matters, but it does to the people who live in those areas. It also matters to people who travel to and through them — especially if the new chargers are fast and they are the first or one of the first hubs to be installed in areas where there is no or limited charging.

Wisconsin currently doesn’t have a huge number of electric vehicles. One reason might be a lack of public charging infrastructure. Hopefully, these new chargers will be used and talked about by local people so that awareness increases. Federal EV incentives for consumers are gone, so it helps to have these new EV chargers being installed.
