San Francisco Airport approves Waymo autonomous passenger rides following successful multi phase pilot programme

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has approved Waymo to begin offering its fully autonomous ride service for passengers travelling to and from the airport, completing the final phase of a pilot programme launched in September 2025.

The approval allows Waymo to begin paid passenger operations for eligible customers, with services starting today for select users. The decision follows extensive testing to ensure the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicle operations on SFO roadways.

Waymo vehicles will operate from the Rental Car Center Level 1 Curbside, which is easily accessed via the AirTrain people mover. The location has been selected to integrate autonomous rides smoothly into existing airport transport flows without disrupting other ground transportation services.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said the launch reflects the city’s identity as a global innovation hub, while supporting economic recovery and providing visitors with a safe and convenient travel option. Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet added that the service aligns with SFO’s commitment to delivering a high quality passenger experience through sustainable and reliable transport choices.

Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said airport access has been one of the most requested features from riders, particularly as millions of travellers are expected to visit the Bay Area for major events this year. She added that fully autonomous rides help improve road safety while offering passengers a seamless start or end to their journey.

The pilot programme approved by the Mayor in September 2025 was delivered in three phases. Phase one focused on autonomous testing with a trained specialist behind the wheel. Phase two introduced fully autonomous passenger services for Waymo employees and designated airport staff. Phase three enables paid, for-hire autonomous services for eligible customers.

With full approval now in place, San Francisco International Airport becomes one of the first major global airports to integrate fully autonomous ride services into regular passenger operations.
