United Airlines Celebrates First Flight To Georgetown, Guyana

United Airlines has started its latest international flight between George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (IAH) and Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Georgetown, Guyana (GEO). The route was announced in November last year, with United also introducing or restarting several other routes from Houston in 2024.

Houston-Georgetown service

United Airlines began flying between Houston and Georgetown in Guyana on April 1. This is the first non-stop service by any carrier between these two destinations. The airline will operate these flights four times a week on its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, offering more than 190 seats across three cabins – economy, premium economy, and business class.

Flight UA437 has a departure time out of Houston at 16:20 and an arrival in Georgetown at 23:30. The return flight UA 438 departs GEO at 00:40 and arrives in IAH at 06:00. Newssource quotes Guyana’s Minister of Tourism, Oneidge Walrond, as saying,

“This direct flight will make it easier and more convenient for travelers from the United States to experience Guyana’s unique beauty and diverse offerings. We expect this to lead to a significant increase in visitor arrivals, which will have a positive ripple effect throughout our economy, creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and contributing to the overall growth and development of the tourism sector.”

Flights to Georgetown

Georgetown has several other flights from the United States besides United’s latest offering. American Airlines, JetBlue, Caribbean Airlines, and Surinam Airways all have flights between the US and Guyana’s capital city.

Per Cirium, American has 30 flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and GEO in April and 57 from Miami International Airport (MIA). JetBlue and Caribbean Airlines also offer 30 flights each from JFK, while Surinam Airways has 13 scheduled flights this month from Miami.

United’s new routes out of Houston

The airline’s latest service to Georgetown is part of a larger expansion plan out of Houston. United’s plan from February to June this year has been to operate more than 850 daily flights out of IAH across over 150 routes.

More than 100 of these are domestic flights, and around 30 are international. Some of its other services that are due to begin in the coming weeks include destinations such as Ontario (CA), Boise, and Hartford. Other developments

Apart from network expansion, United has also been in the news for its fleet development and the issues it is facing due to Boeing’s production delays. The carrier is one of Boeing’s largest customers and has ordered several new aircraft from the plane maker.

But recent controversies surrounding the declining manufacturing quality of the 737 MAX series planes have led to even more delays in the deliveries of new planes to airlines. And one of the affected customers in United.

Frustration within the airline and its pilots is growing, with the carrier even asking some of its cockpit crew to take unpaid time off as there won’t be enough planes to fly in the coming months. United said it is offering pilots “voluntary programs for the month of May to reduce excess staffing.”

United was set to be the launch customer of the Boeing 737 MAX 10 variant, but last month, it told the plane maker to focus more on building the MAX 9 amid uncertainty about the former’s certification schedule.
