Anurag Kapil takes charge as Director (Finance) at NMDC Limited – Indian PSU

Anurag Kapil, a 1998-batch officer of the Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS), has assumed charge as Director (Finance) at NMDC Limited, India’s largest iron ore producer.

With over 26 years of distinguished service across Indian Railways and Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), Kapil brings a strong blend of operational expertise and strategic vision in financial management and public sector governance.

Extensive experience in Railways and policy roles

Kapil has held several key positions in Indian Railways, including:

  • Senior Divisional Finance Manager
  • FA&CAO (Traffic)
  • FA&CAO (Finance & General)
  • Deputy Chief Vigilance Officer

He also served as Director in the Ministry of Coal, where he handled critical policy and sectoral assignments.

Prior to joining NMDC, he was Executive Director, Finance (Expenditure) at the Railway Board, overseeing financial policy, expenditure management, planning, project monitoring, and productivity analysis for Indian Railways.

Strong track record in PSU governance

Kapil has played a significant role in strengthening PSU governance frameworks, contributing to:

  • Capital restructuring initiatives
  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) frameworks
  • Disinvestment proposals
  • Financial approvals across Railway CPSEs

His expertise spans government accounting, project evaluation, PPP frameworks, contract management, arbitration, and program evaluation, backed by deep experience in budgetary control and cost-benefit analysis.

Leadership in strategic and international initiatives

During his tenure, Kapil has contributed to:

  • Formulation of key national policies in the coal sector
  • Major disinvestment initiatives
  • Establishment of regulatory frameworks

He also held additional charge as Director (Finance) at Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), where he led financial strengthening and strategic diversification in multimodal logistics.

Kapil has represented India at various international forums, including missions on:

  • Mining and clean coal technologies
  • Disinvestment roadshows
  • Energy collaborations aligned with net-zero goals

Board-level experience and academic credentials

He has served as Government Nominee Director on the boards of several CPSEs, including:

  • Singareni Collieries Company Limited
  • Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited
  • Railway Energy Management Company Limited
  • Konkan Railway Corporation Limited

An alumnus of Hans Raj College, Kapil holds a degree in Chemistry (Hons), an MBA (Finance & Marketing) from Faculty of Management Studies, and a Master’s in Public Affairs from the University of Minnesota.

He was conferred the National Award for Outstanding and Meritorious Service in 2009 by the Ministry of Railways.
