Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, has appointed Subhasis Sengupta as its new Director (Operations). He assumed charge on June 3, 2026, bringing with him more than three decades of experience in steel production, maintenance, project execution, and plant management.
A Mechanical Engineering graduate from Bengal Engineering & Science University, West Bengal, and an M.Tech in Design and Production Engineering from NIT Durgapur, Sengupta joined Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) as a Management Trainee (Technical) in 1992. Before joining RINL, he was serving as Chief General Manager (Projects) at Durgapur Steel Plant, where he spearheaded major brownfield expansion projects worth over ₹5,500 crore and played a key role in the proposed 3 MTPA greenfield expansion project estimated at ₹28,000 crore.
Earlier, as Chief General Manager (Works) and Unit Head of SAIL Growth Works, he led a significant turnaround, boosting production by 51 per cent and turnover by 108 per cent. At RINL, Sengupta aims to drive operational excellence, digital transformation, and sustainable growth, with a focus on capacity utilization, raw material security, equipment reliability, cost optimization, safety, and decarbonization. He also plans to leverage advanced technologies such as IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) to enhance efficiency, predictive maintenance, and decision-making across operations.
