Veteran natural gas executive with over three decades of industry experience succeeds Kamal Kishore Chatiwal at IGL.City gas distribution major Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has appointed Kumar Shanker as its new Managing Director with effect from June 5, 2026, following his nomination by promoter GAIL (India) Limited.

Shanker succeeds Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, who has been repatriated to GAIL after completing his tenure at IGL. The appointment was approved by the Board of Directors at its meeting held on June 5, 2026.

With over 31 years of extensive experience in the natural gas sector, Kumar Shanker brings deep expertise across commissioning, operations, project management, regulatory affairs, city gas distribution (CGD), and corporate strategy. Prior to joining IGL, he served as the Managing Director of Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL).

Throughout his distinguished career, Shanker has held key positions across various business verticals of GAIL in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and New Delhi. He has played an instrumental role in shaping India’s natural gas policy landscape and has actively engaged with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, NITI Aayog, and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) on critical policy and regulatory issues.

One of his notable contributions includes supporting the implementation of the Unified Tariff framework for India’s National Gas Grid System, a major reform aimed at promoting wider access to natural gas across the country.

Shanker was also instrumental in the development and launch of an online Pipeline Open Access Portal, facilitating transparent and efficient booking of common carrier capacity in GAIL’s gas pipeline network.

In a regulatory filing, IGL stated that Kumar Shanker has no inter-se relationship with any Director of the company and is not debarred from holding the office of Director by virtue of any order issued by SEBI or any other authority.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for IGL as the company continues to expand its city gas distribution network and strengthen its position in India’s growing clean energy ecosystem.
