State-owned NHPC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh for the development of the 3097 MW Etalin Hydro Electric Project (HEP), marking a significant addition to the company’s renewable energy development pipeline.
The Etalin Hydro Electric Project is located in the Dibang Basin of Arunachal Pradesh and is among the largest hydropower projects planned in the country. The agreement reinforces NHPC’s commitment to expanding India’s clean energy infrastructure and strengthening energy security through sustainable hydropower generation.
Under the terms of the MoA, NHPC will develop the project on a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) basis. The project will be operated by the company under a 40-year lease period from the date of its Commercial Operation Date (COD), after which it will be transferred as per the agreed framework.
The acquisition of the Etalin project significantly enhances NHPC’s project portfolio and long-term growth prospects. With a generation capacity of 3097 MW, the project is expected to play a crucial role in meeting India’s rising electricity demand while supporting the country’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.
The development also aligns with the Government of India’s focus on harnessing the vast hydropower potential of the northeastern region, particularly Arunachal Pradesh, which possesses some of the country’s largest untapped hydroelectric resources.
The Etalin Hydro Electric Project is expected to contribute to regional development through infrastructure creation, employment generation, and increased economic activity while boosting renewable energy capacity in the national grid.
