Gateway Distriparks becomes first container train operator to run double-stack service from Nhava Sheva to ICD Garhi Harsaru on WDFC
NHAVA SHEVA : Gateway Distriparks Limited (GDL) has achieved a major milestone in India’s logistics and rail freight sector by becoming the first Container Train Operator (CTO) to run a double-stack container train on the newly completed Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) connecting Nhava Sheva to its Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Garhi Harsaru, Gurgaon.
The inaugural train was loaded at PSA’s Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) at Nhava Sheva, marking a significant step towards expanding double-stack rail connectivity between India’s largest container gateway and the National Capital Region (NCR).
The launch of this service reinforces Gateway Distriparks’ commitment to enhancing multimodal logistics efficiency while supporting the Government of India’s vision of increasing rail’s share in freight transportation.
With its pan-India rail operator licence, Gateway Distriparks is well-positioned to scale up services from Nhava Sheva to key inland destinations across the country. As double-stack operations become regularised on the WDFC, the initiative is expected to facilitate a modal shift from road to rail, resulting in faster transit times, improved supply chain reliability, reduced logistics costs, and lower carbon emissions.
The commencement of double-stack services on the fully operational Western Dedicated Freight Corridor also highlights the transformative potential of dedicated freight infrastructure in strengthening India’s trade competitiveness and enabling sustainable logistics growth.
Gateway Distriparks acknowledged the support and collaboration of Indian Railways, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), and PSA International in achieving this landmark milestone.
