State-owned NLC India Limited (NLCIL) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) have signed a Joint Venture (JV) agreement to jointly develop large-scale renewable energy projects in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant step towards accelerating India’s clean energy transition.

Under the partnership, the two public sector giants will explore and implement a range of renewable energy projects, including solar power, wind energy, hybrid renewable energy systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and pumped storage projects. The projects will be taken up based on technical viability and techno-commercial feasibility assessments.

The proposed JV aims to leverage the strengths of both organizations to create a robust green energy ecosystem and contribute to India’s ambitious renewable energy and decarbonization goals.

Green Power for Diverse Sectors

The scope of the collaboration extends beyond renewable power generation. Electricity generated from these projects is expected to cater to a wide range of consumers and emerging green industries, including:

  • Commercial and Industrial (C&I) consumers
  • Power Distribution Companies (DISCOMs)
  • Power Exchanges
  • E-Mobility sector
  • Green Hydrogen and Green Fuel projects
  • Green Chemicals manufacturing

The partnership may also support renewable energy-linked manufacturing activities such as solar module production, further strengthening the domestic clean energy value chain.

NLC India’s Strategic Transformation

The joint venture reflects NLC India’s evolving business strategy as it accelerates its transition from a conventional mining and power generation company to a diversified clean energy player.

With a legacy spanning nearly seven decades, NLC India has traditionally been engaged in lignite mining and thermal power generation. However, in recent years, the company has significantly expanded its renewable energy portfolio as part of its long-term growth and sustainability strategy.

The collaboration with IOCL is expected to enhance NLC India’s presence in the renewable energy sector while supporting India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and increasing the share of non-fossil fuel-based energy sources in the country’s energy mix.

For IOCL, the partnership aligns with its broader objective of diversifying into green energy and emerging clean fuel businesses, including green hydrogen, renewable power, and sustainable energy solutions.

Industry experts believe the JV could emerge as a key platform for developing integrated clean energy projects in southern India, while creating new opportunities in energy storage, green fuels, and industrial decarbonization.

The move underscores the growing role of India’s public sector enterprises in driving the nation’s energy transition and supporting the government’s vision of a sustainable and self-reliant energy future.
