AIUBEA Flags Staff Crunch in Union Bank, Seeks Urgent Recruitment Drive – Indian PSU

The All India Union Bank Employees’ Association (AIUBEA) has called upon the management of Union Bank of India to take immediate measures to address the growing shortage of staff across its branches, warning that the situation is placing immense pressure on employees and impacting customer service.

In a letter addressed to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank of India on June 20, 2026, the association highlighted the increasing operational challenges faced by branches due to inadequate manpower and expanding business responsibilities.

According to AIUBEA, branches across the country are struggling to cope with rising workloads as vacancies remain unfilled despite repeated demands for recruitment and formalisation of staffing patterns. The association said the shortage of front-line employees has resulted in excessive work pressure, employee fatigue, and difficulties in maintaining efficient customer service.

The union pointed out that discussions on staffing norms for clerical employees and branch officers had already taken place under the bipartite settlement framework and were subsequently submitted to the Central Labour Commissioner (CLC). However, it alleged that no concrete action has been taken so far to resolve the issue.

AIUBEA further stated that against approximately 1,500 clerical vacancies, only around 900 recruits reportedly joined the bank. At the same time, about 1,670 clerical employees were promoted to officer positions. However, due to severe manpower shortages at branches, many of these promoted employees could not be relieved from their existing assignments.

The association noted that retirements, promotions, and business growth have significantly reduced the available workforce at branch level, creating a widening gap between staffing requirements and actual manpower availability.

Expressing concern over the growing burden on employees, AIUBEA urged the bank’s management to initiate immediate recruitment of clerical and subordinate staff, implement a scientific staffing pattern, and ensure adequate manpower deployment across branches.

The association emphasized that timely intervention is essential not only for employee welfare but also for maintaining operational efficiency and delivering quality banking services to customers.
