Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) on Thursday conducted the keel-laying ceremony for the fourth of six Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) being built for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), marking another significant milestone in India’s indigenous shipbuilding programme.

The ceremony was held in Mumbai on June 25, 2026, in the presence of senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd.

The fourth NGOPV is being indigenously designed, developed and constructed by MDL, incorporating modern machinery and state-of-the-art systems in line with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at strengthening domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.

The contract for the construction of six Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels was signed between the Indian Coast Guard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd on December 20, 2023.

The NGOPVs are expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard by improving maritime surveillance, coastal security, search and rescue operations, and protection of India’s maritime interests. The project also reinforces India’s strategic autonomy by promoting indigenous defence production and reducing dependence on imports.

The keel-laying of the fourth vessel reflects the steady progress of the six-ship programme and underscores the government’s continued focus on modernising the Coast Guard fleet to address evolving maritime security challenges.
