In a significant step towards advancing India’s clean energy ambitions, the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the sustainable energy transition of India’s Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

The MoU was signed by Atul Sobti, Director General, SCOPE, and Anne Hammill, Associate Vice-President (Resilience), IISD, reflecting the shared commitment of both organizations to strengthen climate resilience, sustainable development and low-carbon growth across the public sector.

The collaboration aims to help Indian PSUs navigate the evolving landscape of sustainability and decarbonization by promoting strategic dialogue, research, knowledge sharing and institutional capacity building. Key focus areas include renewable energy, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices, green finance and the principles of a just transition.

Under the partnership, SCOPE and IISD will work together to create sustainability-focused learning initiatives, identify funding opportunities, develop practical solutions and provide access to global knowledge resources that can assist enterprises in accelerating their transition towards cleaner and more resilient business models.

As an initial step under the collaboration, the two organizations have already launched the ‘PSUs for Practitioners’ Learning and Action Network on Energy Transition (PSUs for PLANET)’ initiative.

The PSUs for PLANET platform has been conceived as a collaborative forum that encourages trust-based engagement among public sector enterprises while addressing common challenges associated with the energy transition. The initiative recognizes the financial, operational and local sensitivities faced by PSUs and seeks to facilitate practical, context-specific solutions.

The platform will bring together practitioners, policymakers, regulators and industry leaders to exchange knowledge, share best practices and jointly develop strategies for achieving India’s energy transition objectives.

The SCOPE-IISD partnership is expected to play an important role in strengthening the sustainability ecosystem within India’s public sector by enabling enterprises to adopt innovative approaches, improve climate resilience and contribute more effectively to the country’s net-zero and sustainable development commitments.
