The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Power for the extension of re-employment of Shri Gurdeep Singh as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), NTPC Limited, on a contract basis for a further period of six months beyond the completion of his current tenure.

According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) on July 27, 2026, Gurdeep Singh’s tenure has been extended beyond July 31, 2026, for a period of six months with effect from August 1, 2026, or until the regular incumbent assumes charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The order states that the extension was approved by the ACC following a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Power.

Gurdeep Singh has been at the helm of NTPC during a crucial phase of expansion and energy transition. Under his leadership, the country’s largest integrated power utility has significantly expanded its renewable energy portfolio while continuing to strengthen its thermal generation capacity. NTPC has also diversified into green hydrogen, energy storage, nuclear power, and e-mobility initiatives as part of India’s clean energy transition.

The six-month extension is expected to ensure continuity in the leadership of the Maharatna PSU until a regular appointment is made.
