Located in the eastern part of the Raniganj Coalfield in Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, Sonepur Bazari OCP has been a cornerstone of ECL’s production portfolio for decades. The mine plays a crucial role in India’s energy ecosystem by supplying quality thermal coal to leading power utilities such as NTPC, WBPDCL, DVC, CESC and several other core industries, thereby contributing significantly to the nation’s energy security.
Exceptional Start to FY 2026–27
Sonepur Bazari OCP has begun FY 2026–27 on a remarkable note, demonstrating the operational strength and strategic planning capabilities of Eastern Coalfields Limited.
Against an ambitious Annual Action Plan (AAP) target of 120 lakh tonnes of coal production for the current financial year, the mine has already surpassed its scheduled milestones.
During the current period, against a planned coal production target of 27.74 lakh tonnes, Sonepur Bazari has produced 29.22 lakh tonnes, achieving 105.34% of the target. The performance reflects efficient mine planning, optimum utilisation of resources and disciplined execution by the ECL team.
Record Overburden Removal Creates Strong Production Base
One of the most significant highlights of the mine’s performance has been its outstanding achievement in Overburden Removal (OBR), a critical parameter for sustaining long-term coal production.
Against the planned OBR target of 206.20 lakh cubic metres, the mine has removed 253.40 lakh cubic metres, registering an exceptional 122.89% achievement.
The accelerated removal of overburden has substantially increased coal exposure, strengthening the mine’s production capability and creating a solid foundation for achieving the annual production target well ahead of schedule.
Coal Dispatch Registers Strong Growth
Eastern Coalfields Limited has also strengthened its coal evacuation capabilities through efficient logistics management at Sonepur Bazari.
Coal dispatch from the mine has reached 39.94 lakh tonnes during the current financial year, registering an impressive 16% growth over the corresponding period last year.
The increase reflects seamless coordination between mining operations, coal handling facilities and railway logistics, ensuring uninterrupted supply to consumers across the country.
Strategic Planning Ensures Sustainable Growth

Recognising that land availability is fundamental to opencast mining, ECL has made substantial progress in rehabilitation and resettlement activities, facilitating the successful relocation of villages situated over coal-bearing areas.
This has unlocked significant mining land, expanded operational working faces and ensured uninterrupted mining activities. Additional mining areas becoming available have further enhanced operational flexibility, providing a strong platform for sustained production throughout the financial year.
World-Class Coal Handling Infrastructure
A major strength of Sonepur Bazari is its modern 12 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) Coal Handling Plant (CHP) commissioned in 2021.
Equipped with Rapid Loading Systems, twin silos and large bunker capacity, the facility enables dispatch of 10 to 12 railway rakes every day, ensuring seamless coal evacuation without logistical bottlenecks.
The availability of all necessary statutory clearances further reinforces the mine’s operational readiness and production capability.
Advanced Technology Enhancing Productivity
Sonepur Bazari possesses one of the most advanced fleets of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) within Eastern Coalfields Limited.
The mine operates high-capacity Marion Draglines, electric rope shovels, hydraulic excavators, large-capacity dumpers and an extensive range of supporting equipment. Departmental mining operations are effectively supplemented by outsourced fleets, enabling optimum equipment utilisation, operational flexibility and higher productivity.
The mine has also adopted modern mining technologies such as high-capacity Surface Miners for blast-free coal extraction, delivering improved productivity, better coal quality, uniform sizing and reduced environmental impact.
Advanced drilling systems, controlled blasting techniques and comprehensive dust suppression measures further reinforce ECL’s commitment to safe, efficient and environmentally responsible mining.
