Montreal jazz icon Oliver Jones has died at 91.
Jones’s family and label, Justin Time Records, made the announcement on social media Wednesday evening.
“An exceptional musician, a gentle soul and a friend who touched so many lives, his kindness and immense talent left a lasting mark on so many people and generations, and his memory will continue to inspire us,” the statement read.
“He will be profoundly missed. We kindly ask that his family’s privacy be respected as they grieve this tremendous loss.”
The Little Burgundy legend received numerous honours in his illustrious career. Among his accolades are numerous Juno and Félix awards. Jones was also appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in 1993 and awarded the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in 2005.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada described Jones as a jazz legend who brought the city to the “world’s greatest stages.”
“A loyal supporter of the Montreal International Jazz Festival, where he performed countless times over the years, he leaves behind a musical legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come,” she wrote in a social media post Thursday morning.
Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette said the province “has lost an exceptional ambassador of its culture,” and offered her condolences to Jones’ loved ones.
“A true jazz legend, Olivier Jones brought renown to Montreal, Quebec, and Canada on the world’s greatest stages, all while remaining deeply attached to his hometown,” she wrote in a post on X. “His immense talent, generosity, and commitment to the next generation have left their mark on generations of musicians and music lovers.”
The Montreal International Jazz Festival called him “a true pillar of the Festival” in a statement.
“He was part of our story for more than 30 years and remains one of its most iconic artists.
“Among many unforgettable moments, his two-piano concert with his friend and mentor Oscar Peterson during the Festival’s 25th anniversary in 2004 will forever be remembered. Today, we imagine them picking up their musical conversation right where they left off.
“A remarkable musician, Oliver Jones was also a humble, generous man of rare grace, deeply committed to supporting the next generation.
“His smile, his kindness, and his music have left an enduring mark on our Festival, our city, and generations of music lovers.”
