Shankar Sharan has taken charge as Managing Director of ONGC Petrochemicals Marketing Limited (OPML), bringing more than three decades of experience at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) to the newly established entity.

Sharan’s appointment comes as the ONGC Group moves to integrate its petrochemicals marketing and trading operations through a dedicated platform, aimed at strengthening coordination across its downstream business.

Sharan joined ONGC in November 1991 and has held several senior positions spanning production, engineering, marketing and downstream operations. Before his new assignment, he was serving as Group General Manager at ONGC.

OPML to integrate petrochemicals marketing

ONGC Petrochemicals Marketing Limited is a joint venture promoted by ONGC, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) and ONGC Petro-additions Limited (OPaL).

Incorporated on October 7, 2026, OPML has been established to bring the ONGC Group’s petrochemicals and related products marketing and trading activities under a unified platform. ONGC holds a 50% stake in the venture, while MRPL and OPaL hold 25% each.

The new company is expected to coordinate key commercial activities, including product marketing, pricing, distribution, logistics and sales planning, helping the group pursue a more integrated approach to the petrochemicals market.

Extensive experience across ONGC operations

During his long career at ONGC, Sharan has handled responsibilities across offshore and onshore production operations, engineering, marketing and downstream business development. His experience includes senior assignments in production management and the company’s broader downstream and petrochemicals operations.

He is a mechanical engineering graduate from Birla Institute of Technology, Sindri, and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from the Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon.

Sharan has also served as a Non-Executive Director of ONGC Tripura Power Company, reflecting his involvement in the wider ONGC Group’s business activities.

Strategic importance for ONGC Group

The creation of OPML marks an important step in ONGC’s efforts to strengthen its position across the petrochemicals value chain. By bringing marketing and trading activities together, the group aims to improve coordination between its production businesses and market-facing operations.

For ONGC, MRPL and OPaL, the unified platform offers an opportunity to align commercial strategies, streamline distribution and strengthen the marketing of petrochemical products.

Sharan’s immediate challenge will be to establish OPML’s operating framework and translate the group’s integration strategy into stronger market reach and commercial performance.
