IGL Q2 Sales Volume Rises 8% Despite Profitability Challenges – Indian PSU

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) reported a sharp decline in net profit to Rs 24.38 crore in Q2 FY2027, compared with Rs 372.51 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year, as mounting cost pressures and severe margin compression hit profitability.

Despite an 8% increase in sales volume, the city gas distributor reported negative earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of Rs 31.11 crore, highlighting the pressure on operating margins.

The steep fall in profitability, despite higher sales volumes, raises concerns over the company’s ability to translate volume growth into earnings amid challenging operating conditions.

Negative EBITDA Highlights Margin Pressure

IGL’s negative EBITDA indicates that its operating expenses exceeded its operating earnings during the quarter, reflecting the impact of cost pressures on its core business.

The divergence between higher sales volumes and sharply lower profitability underscores the importance of input costs, gas procurement economics and selling margins in determining the company’s financial performance.

Rs 330 Crore DDA Liability in Focus

Investors are also monitoring a contingent liability of approximately Rs 330 crore linked to a dispute with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) over land licence fees.

The potential financial implications of the dispute remain an additional concern for investors assessing IGL’s liabilities and financial outlook.

Profitability Under Pressure

IGL’s Q2 FY2027 performance highlights the challenges facing the company despite continued growth in sales volumes. The sharp decline in net profit and negative EBITDA have brought operating margins and cost management into focus.

Investors will watch for an improvement in operating performance in the coming quarters, alongside developments in the DDA land licence fee dispute.
