Building on success

Restaurant supplier WebstaurantStore began an automated packaging journey five years ago and continues to build on the investment today, most recently adding three fit-to-size packaging machines from Sparck Technologies to its newest warehouse, in Hagerstown, Maryland. The machines are helping the online restaurant supply store reduce labor demands while speeding order fulfillment and boosting accuracy—in Hagerstown and throughout the broader organization, which now uses 13 Sparck CVP Impack machines across its warehouse network.

“The decision to add three more CVP Impack machines is a direct result of the success we’ve experienced with Sparck’s automated packaging technology,” John Bohn, director of implementation at WebstaurantStore, said in a case study describing the project. “From our first machine to the recent installation [of] our 13th, Sparck has been a seamless partner, offering exceptional service, attention to detail, and consistent support. Their technology and team have both been integral to our success.”

Major milestones include cutting the packaging process down to mere seconds and moving toward more sustainable operations by reducing packaging waste.

RELIABILITY RULES THE DAY

WebstaurantStore has made major efficiency gains since implementing its first CVP Impack machines in 2020, with facilities reporting 90% to 95% equipment uptime—which helps support a seamless flow of e-commerce orders through its operations. The machines can handle more than 50,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) of varying sizes and have been key to saving time and reducing the amount of packaging material consumed across the network. Simply put, the machines speed the labor-intensive task of packaging orders, shrink package size by tailoring the box to the order, and reduce or eliminate the need for filler material—all while enhancing throughput and minimizing labor requirements.

Today, the CVP Impack machines measure, construct, tape, weigh, and label an order every seven seconds.

COST REDUCTION REIGNS SUPREME

WebstaurantStore’s leaders say the original 10 fit-to-size machines allowed the company to package items seven times faster than it did previously via traditional, manual methods, which helps reduce labor costs across the organization. Those savings can be reinvested in other areas of the business—and they can also give WebstaurantStore a competitive edge.

“By reducing operational costs, the company can remain competitive in its pricing—directly benefiting its customer base,” Sparck Technologies said in the case study. “The addition of three more machines will further streamline operations and enhance WebstaurantStore’s ability to meet growing demand with greater efficiency.”
