One key to convenient on-the-road charging for electric vehicles is being able to find charging stations on your route and knowing whether there are stalls available to charge. The good news is that Electrify America and Google have teamed up to improve the available data.
Electrify America is now porting its real-time charging station data into Google Maps, so that if you are checking Google Maps for an EV charger, you can see real-time availability.
“The new integration builds on Google’s existing real-time charger availability feature, helping EV drivers make smarter, faster decisions about where to charge and how to plan their routes. Through this real-time data feed, Electrify America’s station listings on Google Maps will include live details on charger availability, connector type, charging speed, and operational status — all within the familiar Google Maps interface for a seamless charging experience,” Electrify America reports.
“As EV adoption continues to grow, this collaboration represents a significant step toward addressing one of the drivers’ most persistent challenges: getting real-time charger status.” Indeed. Hard to argue with that.
“EV adoption is accelerating, and with it comes the expectation of a seamless charging experience,” said Robert Barrosa, president and CEO of Electrify America. “By integrating real-time charging station data, we’re not just improving access, we’re empowering drivers with the confidence to go electric, knowing the information is right at their fingertips.” Yes, public charging still needs to get easier, more convenient, and smarter. This is clearly a step in the right direction. Home charging provides much greater convenience than gassing up a conventional gas car, or anything else, but for those times when you are on a road trip, it really pays to have a good system for checking charger availability easily and quickly. It’s good to see that one of the biggest charging station networks in the US is now focusing on this.
