There may be several hundred thousand people living off-grid in the US according to various sources, and there are off-grid structures used as rentals. There may be far more people who would like the ability to go off-grid, though, and Enphase just announced a solar and energy storage solution with that capability.
Fortunately, I was able to reach out to Enphase to get some more details.
What is the solar power capacity and is it rooftop solar or can it also be ground-mounted?
The system supports rooftop or ground-mounted solar using IQ8 Series Microinverters. There’s no fixed capacity requirement; the power capacity just needs to meet the home’s energy and charging needs for the IQ Battery 5P.
The setup combines the IQ Battery 5P with embedded grid-forming microinverters, IQ8 Series Microinverters with Sunlight JumpStart capability, and a third-party standby AC generator, which work together to seamlessly power the home.
What is the energy storage capacity?
With Enphase Power Control, you can scale a system to 40 kWh of capacity and 15.4 kVA of power.
What is the battery chemistry?
LFP.
Who is the system for?
Homeowners who need resilient and self-sufficient energy supply without access to the utility grid.
Would the customer be able to use solar power and their energy storage independent of their grid connection if they needed to?
Yes, this is meant for people without a grid connection. Customers must have the full setup – solar, battery, and AC generator.
How does the system form its own microgrid?
The IQ System Controller 3 integrates a Generator Interconnect Device (GID) to parallel an AC standby generator with solar and batteries. Intelligent integrated algorithms control when the generator is started and stopped, as well as how much power is used from the generator to reduce fuel consumption.
If so, why is that beneficial?
This microgrid capability provides 24/7 dependable power, resilience against outages, energy independence, and optimized generator operation, avoiding damage to equipment. Most of the time, the house should be able to operate off just the solar and battery system, with the generator offering long term backup if the sun isn’t shining and system balancing needs.
What are the dimensions and weight of the battery system?
The IQ Battery 5P is 7.4 inches deep, 21.7 inches wide, and 38.6 inches tall, with a weight of 174 pounds.
What is the warranty for the solar and battery?
The IQ Battery 5P system includes a 15-year limited warranty. One of the best battery warranties in the industry.
What is the whole system’s cost?
Cost depends on a variety of factors and varies region to region. You can find various system component costs on distributor websites — but again, it’s different region to region and often changes based on installer and overall project complexity.
Can the system work with a home EV charger?
Yes.
Are there purchase incentives?
ITC through the end of the year and some incentives state by state.
