Ford has followed Hyundai onto the website of obscure web-based bookseller Amazon. Mixing today’s reality with the early days of Amazon sure sounds weird, but it is early discussions about whether people would buy X, Y, or Z online that comes to mind for me first when I see news of Ford beginning to sell used vehicles — er, certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles — on Amazon Autos. A couple decades ago, let alone three, it would be mind blowing to assume people would buy used vehicles online through Amazon. But here we are.

The news from Ford today is much broader than EVs, as it’s going to sell all types of vehicles on Amazon Autos. However, we really only care about the EVs, and there’s a specific highlight on that. Ford writes:

  • “EV Certified: For electric Ford vehicles up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles. They receive a specialized 127-point inspection and the same comprehensive warranty coverage as Gold Certified vehicles.”

Gold Certified is as follows: “For Ford vehicles up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles. They undergo a 172-point inspection and include a 12-month/12,000-mile (whichever comes first) comprehensive limited warranty.”

More broadly on the warranties, Ford writes, “Every vehicle is backed by a Ford Blue Advantage warranty, which means it has passed a thorough multi-point inspection and comes with roadside assistance. This program combines the trust and quality of a Ford-certified vehicle with the familiar, convenient shopping experience of Amazon.”

That sounds good to me. What more can a consumer ask for in 2025?

You also have 14 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first, to return a vehicle and get your money back if you decide you are not happy with the purchase.

Now, there is a limit to the shopping. You can only search inventory from within a 75-mile radius of your location. You’re not going to be able to buy a Ford Mustang Mach-E that’s parked over in Beverly Hills if you live in Miami, Florida. In actuality, you’re really just buying and doing everything through a local dealer. Amazon Autos just makes it easier, presumably, to find a car.

And, actually, for now you can’t buy a Ford on Amazon Autos at all. Initial markets for this rollout are just Los Angeles, Seattle, and Dallas. Stay tuned for entry into new markets if you don’t live in one of those regions.
