Vedanta Aluminium Scales Lanjigarh Refinery to 5 MTPA; Sets New Alumina Production Record – Indian PSU

0 21

Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has successfully scaled up operations at its Lanjigarh Refinery in Odisha to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), marking a major milestone in the company’s growth journey and reinforcing India’s push towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat in aluminium production.

With this expansion, Vedanta Lanjigarh has emerged as the world’s second-largest alumina refinery outside China, taking India’s total alumina refining capacity close to 13 MTPA and positioning the country as the third-largest alumina producer globally. The Lanjigarh refinery alone now contributes 38% of India’s total alumina output, making it the largest single-location alumina refinery in the country.

The milestone comes at a time when domestic aluminium demand is accelerating across key sectors such as infrastructure, automotive and electric vehicles, renewable energy, construction, railways, and aerospace.

Record Monthly Production Achieved

In parallel with the capacity expansion, the refinery recorded its highest-ever monthly alumina production of 254 kilotonnes (KT) in November 2025, reflecting:

  • 8% month-on-month growth
  • 68% year-on-year increase
  • Operational excellence during the month was highlighted by:
  • Handling over 700 rakes, the highest ever in a single month
  • Achieving the lowest specific power consumption in the last 20 months
  • Reducing conversion costs to an 18-month low through process optimisation and resource efficiency

Leadership Commentary

Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Aluminium is a strategic metal, central to India’s industrial growth and the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Scaling our Lanjigarh operations to 5 MTPA is both a capacity milestone and a step towards a resilient, world-class aluminium value chain. Our ramp-up, evidenced by record monthly outputs, reflects our commitment to responsible resource development, innovation, and long-term value creation for the nation.”

Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO, Vedanta Alumina Business, added, “This achievement is a testament to the dedication and engineering excellence of our teams. From concept to commissioning, every stage of the expansion has been driven by precision, agility, and collaboration. We continue to sharpen processes, enhance efficiency, and uphold our Zero Harm culture to deliver reliable performance at scale.”

From Greenfield to Global Scale

Commissioned initially as a 2 MTPA greenfield facility, the Lanjigarh refinery began its ambitious expansion journey in 2020, steadily transforming into a globally competitive alumina manufacturing hub.

Beyond industrial growth, Vedanta Aluminium continues to invest in community development initiatives, spanning education, healthcare, sports promotion, and skill development, ensuring inclusive growth alongside industrial progress.
