Waymo reached a huge milestone today. It passed 20 million passenger trips.
On antisocial media site X (where Waymo likes to make this kind of announcement), the company wrote:
“20 million. That’s how many times you’ve trusted Waymo to get you where you’re going.
“Today, we’ve officially surpassed 20 million fully autonomous trips with public riders! Thank you to everyone who helped make this a reality.”
I have to admit that I was surprised to see that Waymo has reached 20 million passenger trips — or anything close to that number. It may feel like the company is taking a long time to scale up, but it’s certainly been accelerating lately.
Waymo reached 10 million passenger trips just in May. It had doubled from 5 million in just 5 months to reach that milestone. This time around, the doubling took 7 months, but that is also astounding. It took 5 months earlier in the year to add 5 million passenger rides, and now it’s taken 7 months to add another 10 million.
Quite impressive.
