Born in 1932 in Chicago, Carl E. Schachter studied music theory with Felix Salzer at the Mannes College of Music, where he later became a faculty member and collaborator.
At the cusp of building his career, Schachter completed a Bachelor of Science degree from the Mannes School of Music, and subsequently earned a Master of Arts in musicology from New York University. He finished his formal training with a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Mannes College of Music.
In 1972, he joined the faculty of Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he later served as Distinguished Professor of Music from 1993 to 1996. For over three decades, he also continued to teach seminars there until 2012.
He also taught for more than two decades at The Juilliard School, where he was honored with the William Schuman Scholar Award in 2014 in recognition of his contributions to the musical community and to arts education.
As a teacher, Schachter was celebrated for his engaging classroom style, and was known to demonstrate analyses at the piano to explore works by composers such as J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin.
His groundbreaking work as a music theorist primarily advanced Schenkerian theory by integrating rhythmic, metric, and harmonic dimensions into linear voice-leading analysis, while emphasizing how these elements interact to form structural coherence in tonal music.
Among the many books he authored are Unfoldings: Essays in Schenkerian Theory and Analysis (1999), which focuses on topics such as rhythm and durational reduction.
In 2016, he released The Art of Tonal Analysis: Twelve Lessons in Schenkerian Theory, a book that transcribes his seminar lectures and offers practical lessons on analytical interpretation and its implications for performance.
