In a major milestone for the city’s clean energy transition, GAIL (India) Limited Varanasi has connected its 200th commercial PNG (Piped Natural Gas) customer, doubling its commercial customer base in less than a year.

The growing network now serves several prominent hotels, restaurants, institutions and community kitchens across the city, including Taj Ganges, Radisson Hotel Varanasi, Madin, Amayaa, OM Vilas, Rajshree Sweets, Pizzeria Vatika, Bikanerwala, McDonald’s, Banaraes Club, as well as institutions such as Kashi Vishwanath Anna Kshetra, Kashi Annapurna Anna Kshetra, The Akshaya Patra Foundation and Apna Ghar Ashram.

The shift to PNG by these establishments has significantly reduced dependence on conventional cooking fuel. According to GAIL, the connected commercial customers have collectively helped eliminate the use of nearly 7,000 LPG cylinders every month, leading to safer operations, lower carbon emissions and improved environmental sustainability.

The achievement is particularly noteworthy given the unique infrastructure challenges in Varanasi, including narrow lanes, dense underground utility networks and heavy traffic movement. Despite these constraints, GAIL has continued to expand its city gas distribution network, ensuring wider access to reliable, efficient and cleaner energy solutions.

The milestone underscores GAIL Varanasi’s commitment to supporting the Government of India’s clean energy goals while contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for the holy city.
