GAIL Signs Strategic MoU with KABIL to Secure Critical Minerals for India’s Clean Energy Future – Indian PSU
In a strategic move that underscores India’s growing focus on securing critical mineral resources for the clean energy transition, GAIL (India) Limited, the country’s leading natural gas company and a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL).
The partnership is aimed at identifying, evaluating and pursuing opportunities in the exploration, acquisition and development of critical and strategic mineral assets, both in India and overseas. The collaboration is expected to play an important role in strengthening India’s long-term mineral security and reducing dependence on imports of key raw materials essential for emerging technologies.
The agreement comes at a time when countries across the world are competing to secure reliable supplies of minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite and rare earth elements, which are indispensable for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy systems, energy storage solutions, semiconductors, electronics and advanced defence technologies.
Strategic Partnership for Critical Mineral Security
Under the MoU, GAIL and KABIL will work together to identify and evaluate potential opportunities in the critical and strategic minerals sector. The collaboration will also facilitate the exchange of technical expertise, market intelligence and best practices while exploring avenues for investment across the mineral value chain.
The two organisations are expected to jointly assess commercially viable projects and collaborate on initiatives that can contribute to India’s long-term resource security. The partnership also envisages knowledge sharing, capacity building and cooperation in mineral exploration, development and supply chain management.
Why Critical Minerals Matter
Critical minerals have become central to the global energy transition. As nations accelerate the adoption of electric mobility, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, demand for these minerals has witnessed unprecedented growth.
India’s ambitious targets for electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, green hydrogen, solar power and energy storage require uninterrupted access to these strategic resources. However, the country remains heavily dependent on imports for several critical minerals, making resource diversification a national priority.
By collaborating with KABIL, GAIL aims to contribute to building resilient supply chains that will support India’s clean energy ambitions while reducing exposure to geopolitical risks and global supply disruptions.
About KABIL
Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL) was established as a joint venture of three Central Public Sector Enterprises—
- National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO)
- Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL)
- Mineral Exploration & Consultancy Limited (MECL)
The company has been entrusted with identifying, acquiring, developing and processing strategic mineral assets overseas to ensure a steady supply of critical minerals for India’s growing industrial and technological needs.
Over the past few years, KABIL has actively explored opportunities in several resource-rich countries as part of the Government of India’s strategy to secure overseas mineral assets.
GAIL’s Diversification Strategy
While GAIL is India’s largest natural gas transmission and marketing company, it has been steadily expanding beyond its traditional business portfolio.
The Maharatna PSU has made significant investments in renewable energy, green hydrogen, biofuels, LNG infrastructure, petrochemicals and energy transition projects. The latest collaboration with KABIL further strengthens its strategy of participating in sectors that will shape India’s low-carbon economy over the coming decades.
Industry experts believe access to critical minerals will become as strategically important as oil and natural gas in the coming years, making this partnership a timely and forward-looking initiative.
Supporting the Clean Energy Mission
The MoU aligns with the Government of India’s broader vision of achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat in critical technologies and ensuring uninterrupted supplies of raw materials required for manufacturing advanced energy systems.
Critical minerals form the backbone of lithium-ion batteries, wind turbines, solar photovoltaic modules, electric vehicles, power electronics and numerous high-tech industrial applications. Ensuring secure access to these resources is therefore essential for meeting India’s climate commitments and energy transition goals.
The collaboration between GAIL and KABIL is expected to create opportunities for future investments in exploration, mining, mineral processing and strategic partnerships across global markets.
