BCCL has intensified its crackdown on illegal coal mining in Kantapahari, stepping up raids, CISF patrols, area domination and the filling of illegal mining sites to address safety risks in the area.
The latest action includes an area domination exercise with 90 CISF personnel on September 7 and a raid on September 4 that resulted in the recovery of approximately 11.49 tonnes of illegally mined coal. A night patrol involving 50 CISF personnel was conducted on September 3.
Earlier, on September 2, a raid in the area led to the recovery of approximately 2,000 bags of illegally mined coal, which were destroyed at the spot due to the prevailing circumstances.
BCCL said intelligence-based raids, QRT patrols, area domination and continuous surveillance are being carried out regularly to prevent illegal mining and coal theft.
The company has also launched a special drive to fill the mouths of illegal mining sites with overburden (OB). The work began on September 12, and approximately 46 Hallpack loads of OB have been dumped so far.
The action comes amid concerns over the safety risks posed by illegal mining. On September 9, the CISF Senior Commandant wrote to the Officer-in-Charge of Ramkanali Police Station, informing the police about illegal mining activities and attempts in the area. The letter was received by the local police on September 11 after continued follow-up.
BCCL and CISF also shared available video footage and photographs to help identify suspected persons involved in the activities. The communication noted that the area has been declared unsafe for mining by the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) and warned of the possibility of a serious accident due to illegal mining.
The CISF has requested the local police to register an FIR against those involved and initiate strict action in accordance with the law.
