Reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mining and environmental conservation, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) carried out an extensive plantation drive by planting over 3.20 lakh saplings across its operational areas in a single day as part of Coal India Limited’s nationwide Guinness World Records plantation campaign.

A major highlight of the campaign was the development of Bilaspur city’s first Miyawaki forest initiative by SECL, where 15,000 saplings were planted over 1.5 hectares of land behind the New Commissioner Office at Koni, Bilaspur, on 21 July 2026.

The plantation drive forms part of Coal India Limited’s ambitious nationwide effort to establish a Guinness World Records benchmark for the highest number of trees planted in a single day.

Bilaspur’s First Miyawaki Forest

The newly developed Miyawaki forest is expected to significantly enhance biodiversity, increase urban green cover and improve the local ecosystem. The Miyawaki method enables the growth of dense native forests in a relatively small area, creating self-sustaining green spaces that mature much faster than conventional plantations.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in Bilaspur’s urban environmental development and reflects SECL’s focus on innovative afforestation techniques.

CMD Harish Duhan Emphasises Environmental Responsibility

Addressing the gathering, Harish Duhan, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, SECL, said: “Environmental protection is not merely a responsibility but our collective commitment towards future generations. Dense forests developed through the Miyawaki method will not only enhance green cover but will also play a significant role in biodiversity conservation, maintaining ecological balance, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.”

Part of Coal India’s Nationwide Green Initiative

Coal India Limited has launched plantation drives across all its subsidiary companies under the Guinness World Records campaign. As part of this initiative, SECL alone planted more than 3.20 lakh saplings across its mining areas and operational units in a single day.

The large-scale afforestation programme reflects SECL’s continued commitment to sustainable mining, ecological restoration, carbon sequestration and environmental stewardship.

With the successful execution of this massive plantation drive and the launch of Bilaspur’s first Miyawaki forest, SECL has further strengthened its contribution towards building a greener, cleaner and more climate-resilient future.
