Uttar Pradesh is set to witness a major architectural and administrative transformation as the state government moves ahead with plans to construct a new Legislative Assembly complex. Among the proposed designs, a lotus-shaped structure has emerged as the frontrunner, symbolizing the state’s cultural heritage, progress, and aspirations.
The proposed Assembly complex is envisioned as far more than a legislative building. It aims to become a modern governance hub that reflects Uttar Pradesh’s diversity while providing world-class infrastructure for lawmakers and administrators.
Dedicated Meeting Spaces for All 75 Districts
One of the most significant features of the proposed Assembly complex is the provision of dedicated meeting and discussion spaces for representatives from each of Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts.
At present, legislators from different districts largely rely on common committee rooms and meeting halls, often leading to scheduling challenges and coordination issues. Under the new plan, the Assembly complex will be divided into district-based sectors, with each district receiving its own meeting zone.
These dedicated spaces will enable legislators and officials to discuss district-specific development projects, local challenges, and policy proposals in a more organized and efficient manner. Officials believe the arrangement will improve coordination, accelerate decision-making, and enhance transparency in governance.
Lotus-Inspired Architecture
The proposed building’s most distinctive feature is its lotus-inspired design. According to the concept, the central Assembly chamber will form the heart of the complex, while surrounding wings, designed like lotus petals, will accommodate administrative offices, a modern library, research facilities, and digitally enabled meeting halls.
The design seeks to combine architectural aesthetics with functionality, creating a landmark structure that represents both tradition and modern governance.
Sustainable and Technology-Driven Campus
The government also plans to make the new Assembly campus environmentally sustainable. Proposed green features include:
- Solar power generation
- Rainwater harvesting systems
- Extensive landscaping and green spaces
- Energy-efficient infrastructure
In addition, the complex is expected to incorporate advanced digital governance tools, including an e-Vidhan (digital legislature) system, smart administrative facilities, and visitor galleries for the public.
The objective is to create an Assembly that functions not only as the state’s law-making institution but also as a model centre for transparent, technology-driven governance.
Three Designs Sent for Final Approval
Providing an update on the project, Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) Vice Chairman Prathamesh Kumar said that 12 architectural designs were initially presented for consideration.
“Out of the 12 designs, three have been shortlisted and forwarded to the state government for final approval. The government is currently evaluating these proposals and will select the best design,” he said.
Approval Process Underway
The project is presently in the final stages of approvals related to land allocation and budgetary provisions. Once these clearances are completed, the government is expected to formally unveil the selected design.
If the project proceeds as planned, the foundation stone for the new Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly complex could be laid within the next two to three years, marking the beginning of one of the state’s most ambitious public infrastructure projects in recent years.
