MCL’s Bhubaneswari OCP Sets New Benchmarks in Sustainable Coal Mining with Technology-Driven Growth – Indian PSU
Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) continues to strengthen its position as one of India’s leading coal producers, with its Bhubaneswari Opencast Project (OCP) emerging as a benchmark for technology-led mining, operational excellence and sustainable development.
Situated in Odisha’s Talcher Coalfield, Bhubaneswari OCP has evolved into one of the most productive and technologically advanced opencast mines under Coal India Limited. Designed with a peak rated production capacity of 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the project plays a crucial role in ensuring a steady supply of coal to thermal power plants that support the country’s growing energy requirements.
Surpasses Annual Production Target
The mine delivered an impressive performance during FY 2025-26, producing 26.477 million tonnes of coal against an Annual Action Plan target of 25 million tonnes, achieving 105.98% of its production goal.
Since commencing operations, Bhubaneswari OCP has produced approximately 370.4 million tonnes of coal, reaffirming its strategic importance in India’s coal sector.
The momentum has continued into FY 2026-27, with the annual production target increased to 28 million tonnes. During the first quarter alone, the project has already produced 7.62 million tonnes, indicating strong operational readiness for achieving the enhanced target.
Advanced Mining Technologies Enhance Productivity
A defining feature of Bhubaneswari OCP is its extensive adoption of modern mining technologies aimed at improving efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
The mine has implemented 100% blast-free Surface Miner technology for coal extraction, eliminating the need for drilling and blasting within coal seams. The technology enables improved coal recovery, uniform coal sizing and significantly lowers dust generation, noise and ground vibrations.
For overburden removal, the project uses controlled blasting with advanced electronic delay detonators to minimise environmental disturbances.
Coal transportation has also been modernised through a covered conveyor network integrated with a 25 MTPA First Mile Connectivity (FMC) SILO system. More than 85% of coal dispatches are now carried out through rail transport, reducing road congestion and emissions.
Adding another milestone, Bhubaneswari houses Coal India Limited’s first Automatic Truck Loading System (ATLS), which has enhanced loading speed, operational transparency and accuracy while reducing manual intervention.
Community Development Remains a Priority
Alongside mining operations, the project has undertaken a range of initiatives to support surrounding communities.
Infrastructure development, including roads, community centres and educational facilities, has been complemented by livelihood support programmes and environmental awareness campaigns. Plantation drives, including the distribution of fruit-bearing trees and Sal saplings, have further strengthened community participation in environmental conservation.
These initiatives reflect the project’s emphasis on inclusive growth alongside industrial development.
Strong Focus on Environmental Management
Environmental sustainability remains central to Bhubaneswari OCP’s operations.
The mine has adopted comprehensive pollution control measures such as continuous air quality monitoring, extensive dust suppression systems, wheel-washing facilities and large-scale afforestation programmes supported by a dedicated five-hectare Sal nursery.
Its efforts have received industry recognition through prestigious honours, including a Five-Star Rating and the Kalinga Environment Excellence Award, acknowledging its commitment to environmentally responsible mining practices.
Safety and Financial Performance
Safety continues to remain a major strength of the project. Bhubaneswari OCP has maintained a zero-fatality record for five consecutive years and has earned top honours during the Annual Mines Safety Fortnight for its high safety standards.
Financially, the project has also delivered strong results, reporting a Profit Before Tax (PBT) of ₹1,792.60 crore during FY 2025-26, making it one of the key contributors to MCL’s overall financial performance.
