Bank customers across India will have to plan their branch visits carefully in October as banks will remain closed on multiple days during the month due to national holidays, weekends and state-specific festivals.

According to the October 2026 bank holiday calendar, banks will observe up to 16 holidays across different states and regions. However, this does not mean that every bank branch will remain closed for 16 days. Bank holidays vary from state to state depending on local festivals and regional observances.

The festive period in October includes Gandhi Jayanti, Durga Puja, Dussehra, Vijaya Dashami, Ayudha Puja, Lakshmi Puja and other regional occasions.

Why Bank Holidays Differ From State to State

The Reserve Bank of India follows a state-wise holiday framework under which bank branches can remain closed for regional festivals and local occasions in addition to national holidays and regular weekly holidays.

Therefore, a bank branch in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh or Maharashtra, for example, may have a different holiday schedule from a branch in West Bengal, Sikkim, Kerala or Tripura.

Customers should therefore check the holiday calendar applicable to their particular branch before visiting.

Digital Banking Services to Continue

A bank holiday does not mean that all banking services stop. Customers can generally continue to use UPI, internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs and other digital payment facilities even when physical branches are closed.

However, services requiring a physical branch visit, such as certain cheque-related transactions, passbook services, cash-counter operations and locker access, may not be available on holidays.

With several holidays falling close together around Dussehra and Durga Puja, customers who need branch-based services should plan their transactions in advance.

Important: The number of holidays varies by state. The reported figure of up to 16 bank holidays in October is an aggregate across different locations and includes regional holidays; it does not mean that every bank branch in India will remain closed for 16 days.
