In a significant milestone for India’s coal sector, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) has formally handed over the site of its 2.0 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) Dugda Coal Washery to JSW Steel. The handover ceremony was held at BCCL’s Koyla Bhawan headquarters in Dhanbad in the presence of BCCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Executive Directors, and senior officials from JSW Steel and JSW Energy.

The monetization of the Dugda Coal Washery, undertaken under the guidance of the Ministry of Coal, marks the first coal washery monetization initiative in the country. The project is expected to serve as a model for modernizing coal-sector assets through private sector participation while enhancing operational efficiency and optimizing resource utilization.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening India’s coal beneficiation capacity and improving the utilization of domestic coking coal resources. It is expected to increase the availability of high-quality washed coking coal, thereby reducing dependence on imports and contributing to significant foreign exchange savings. The project aligns with the Government of India’s Mission Coking Coal, which seeks to enhance domestic coking coal production and improve self-reliance in the steel sector.

JSW’s participation is expected to improve coal supply chain efficiency, promote sustainable and advanced coal processing practices, and generate new employment opportunities. The project is also likely to support industrial growth in Jharkhand and neighboring regions.

The Dugda Coal Washery monetization is being viewed as a major step towards building a modern, efficient, and self-reliant coal sector, reinforcing the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat through strategic public-private collaboration.
