BCCL Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Mining, Recovers Over 40 Tonnes of Illegal Coal – Indian PSU
Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, coal theft, illegal storage and unauthorized transportation of coal as part of the Government of India’s Zero Coal Leakage Tolerance Policy. Working in close coordination with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), district administration and local police, BCCL continues to conduct intelligence-based operations across its operational areas to safeguard national assets.
As part of the intensive campaign carried out on August 11, 2026, coordinated teams undertook intelligence-based raids, drone surveillance, area domination exercises, Quick Response Team (QRT) deployments, special vehicle checks and M-Parivahan verification across sensitive locations.
During the operation, action was taken at 18 locations, leading to the recovery of approximately 40.95 tonnes of illegally extracted coal, which was subsequently handed over to the BCCL management. Authorities also seized a motorcycle used for illegal coal transportation and filled an illegal mining pit.
The largest recovery, around 40.85 tonnes of illegal coal, was made from the mango orchard area of Govindpur Area. In Kusunda Area, a motorcycle carrying nearly 100 kg of illegal coal was seized, while an illegal mining pit in Khas Sijua of Katras Area was successfully filled.
Drone surveillance covered sensitive locations in Mahuda, Gonudih, Putki, Area-10 and Area-12/12A. While most areas showed no suspicious activity, a few inactive illegal outlets and rat-hole mines were identified. BCCL has initiated action to permanently seal and fill the identified illegal openings, particularly in Area-12/12A.
To ensure transparency in coal transportation, officials inspected 152 coal-laden vehicles, with 128 vehicles verified through the M-Parivahan platform. No major discrepancies were detected in vehicle documents or transportation records during the verification process.
CISF personnel also responded promptly to law-and-order and industrial security situations across various operational areas. Traffic disruptions and local protests were resolved peacefully through dialogue, while Quick Response Teams and additional security personnel were strategically deployed at sensitive locations to maintain normalcy.
BCCL stated that it will continue its coordinated enforcement efforts through regular patrolling, drone surveillance, Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC)-based monitoring, intelligence-driven operations and vehicle inspections in collaboration with CISF, district authorities and local police.
