BHEL Bags Rs 21,000 Crore EPC Contract for 2,400 MW Meja Supercritical Power Project – Indian PSU
In a major boost to India’s thermal power expansion programme, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract worth more than Rs 21,000 crore for the 3×800 MW Meja Supercritical Thermal Power Project (STPP) Stage-II in Uttar Pradesh.
The state-owned engineering and manufacturing giant received the Notification of Award (NOA) on June 4, 2026, from Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL), a joint venture between NTPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).
The contract, awarded through International Competitive Bidding (ICB), is among the largest power sector orders secured by BHEL in recent years and underscores the company’s continued leadership in India’s thermal power equipment and EPC market.
Under the contract, BHEL will undertake the complete EPC package for the project, including design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of three supercritical thermal generating units of 800 MW each.
The company is required to achieve Completion of Facilities (COF) within 70 months from the date of the award, placing the project’s expected completion timeline in early 2032.
Located in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh, the Meja Stage-II project will add 2,400 MW of supercritical thermal generation capacity to the national grid. Supercritical technology offers higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions compared to conventional sub-critical thermal power plants, contributing to cleaner and more efficient coal-based power generation.
The award comes at a time when India is accelerating capacity addition to meet rising electricity demand driven by industrial growth, urbanisation and increasing consumption. The project is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening power availability in northern India and supporting the country’s long-term energy security objectives.
For BHEL, the order further strengthens its already robust order book and reinforces its position as the country’s premier power equipment manufacturer and EPC contractor.
