An emergency was declared onboard a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-200 on Thursday morning due to a reported flap disagree. Flight DL2728 was traveling from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) when the incident took place.

A flap disagree is when the position of the aircraft’s flaps does not align with what has been instructed by the pilots. It is a situation that does not occur very often, but one that pilots are well-trained for. After the crew declared the emergency with Air Traffic Control, the aircraft was given priority to land, and touched down safely at 09:35. There were injuries following the incident, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
One of nine flights from Savannah to Atlanta
Flight DL2728 was one of nine flights operated by Delta Air Lines on Thursday between Savannah and the carrier’s hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The facility was recently named as the busiest airport in the world in 2023, processing more than 104 million passengers, which was an increase of 11.7% on 2022, but still 5.3% down on the figures seen in 2019.

Atlanta has once again topped the world’s busiest airports list.
According to Flightradar24, the aircraft involved in Thursday’s incident was registered as N551NW. At the time of writing, the aircraft remains on the ground in Atlanta, although it is scheduled to operate as normal from Friday morning.

Flight DL2728 was the aircraft’s first flight of the day, having spent the night in Savannah, while in the days running up to Thursday’s incident, it had operated from Atlanta to destinations including San Juan (SJU), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Chicago (ORD), and Punta Cana (PUJ).

Data from ch-aviation shows that N551NW is one of 111 Boeing 757-200s in Delta Air Lines’ fleet, making the carrier the largest operator of the type worldwide. The aircraft have an average age of 20.1 years old, significantly more than that of the fleet as a whole, which comes in at 15.6 years old.
Turbulent times for Delta Air Lines
Several Delta Air Lines aircraft have been involved in incidents over recent weeks. The news of Thursday’s flap disagree comes just three days after one of the airline’s Boeing 767-300ERs suffered ground damage at London Gatwick Airport (LGW) when one of the aircraft’s emergency slides was inadvertently deployed on top of a catering truck. The aircraft eventually departed for New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) more than three hours behind schedule.

Last week, one of the carrier’s Airbus A321s also declared an emergency after being struck by lightning while landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
