The Television Academy announced some cuts to the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards televised ceremony late on Friday. Fans of DTF St. Louis or Laurie Metcalf megafreaks — we are legion — may be dismayed to hear that the Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Limited Series or Movie categories are getting shunted to what used to be called the Creative Arts Emmys. Those ceremonies last for two nights, aren’t televised, and this year will happen a full week before the one we see on TV. Also, this year all three nights will just be called the Emmys. No “Primetime,” no “Creative Arts.” Has the TV Academy thought about how this movie may confuse people on the logistical side? No one thinks of the caterers.
Other categories getting bumped from broadcast include Writing for a Variety Series, Directing for a Limited Series or Movie, and Writing for a Limited Series or Movie and Variety Special (Live). Condolences in advance to the writers of Last Week Tonight, who have won on TV for the past 10 years. According to Variety, the new leaned-down Emmys will only broadcast 19 categories, compared to last year’s 26. Get ready for even more classic TV cast reunions to take up the airtime! Sure, there’s a highlight reel from the F.K.A. Creative Arts Emmys on the main broadcast, but it’s not the same as seeing someone learn they’re a winner (or loser) in real time on your TV screen.
