Lufthansa Group
has finally found a home for its 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8 order, which it made in December 2023, assigning the 40 aircraft to its low-cost carrier, Eurowings.
First delivery in 2027
In a statement, Eurowings
said that Lufthansa Group gave the go-ahead for “one of the largest fleet modernizations in European aviation,” assigning 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8
aircraft to the Germany-based low-cost carrier.
The airline stated that Boeing should deliver the first aircraft in 2027, with the gradual integration of new short and medium-haul aircraft paving the way for Eurowings to operate one of the youngest fleets in Europe.

aircraft, with the 737 MAX 8 offering 39 more seats than the former.
“The order for 40 brand-new 737 aircraft is equivalent to an investment of around five billion dollars at list price. This makes it by far the largest and most expensive sustainability project in the more than 30-year history of Eurowings.”
Eurowings also noted that the new-generation Boeing aircraft will provide significant fuel savings, less noise around airports, and lower CO2 emissions. The low-cost carrier said that the 737 MAX 8 will consume 30% less fuel and emit 30% fewer emissions, presumably compared to the A319ceo and A320ceo it will replace.
Boeing’s 737 MAX product page noted that the aircraft uses 20% less fuel and emits 20% fewer CO2 emissions than its predecessor family, the 737 Next Generation

With the introduction of the 737 MAX 8, Eurowings will become an operator of the latest Airbus and Boeing narrowbodies. Ch-aviation data showed that the German carrier has seven A320neo
(one assigned to Eurowings Malta) and five A321neo
aircraft in its fleet in addition to the older-generation Airbus single-aisles.

Focus on medium-haul flying
The low-cost carrier added that in addition to the extra seats offered by the 737 MAX 8 compared to the previous-generation Airbus single-aisles, the

aircraft provides a lot more range, enabling Eurowings to launch flights on longer medium-haul destinations.
Flying within this segment has been growing within Eurowings’ network, the airline said. Data from the aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning system showed that in July 2019, Eurowings had 686 weekly flights within the medium-haul segment, which has grown to 1,322 weekly flights in July 2025.

The United Kingdom’s (UK) Civil Aviation Administration (CAA) defined a medium-haul itinerary as one that is between 1,500 kilometers (809.9 nautical miles) and 3,500 km (3,041 NMI).

Foundations for a successful future
Jens Bischof, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Eurowings, said that the 40 737 MAX 8 aircraft will lay the foundations for a successful future for the airline geared toward ambitious sustainability goals.
“The high cost-efficiency of the new jets also enables us to continue to offer Eurowings customers fair and attractive fares. Without such a technological leap, an airline will hardly be able to operate successfully on the market in the 2030s.”
Carsten Spohr, the CEO of Lufthansa Group, added that Eurowings’ has established itself as the point-to-point airline within the group’s short-haul network with a convincing strategy in an extremely competitive market.

Lufthansa Group ordered 80 new-generation single-aisle aircraft on December 19, 2023, with the Germany-based entity purchasing 40 Airbus A220-300 and 40 737 MAX 8s. The order includes 20 and 60 options, respectively.
At the time, it did not disclose which of the group’s airlines would receive the A220-300 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft. In June 2024, the group unveiled that Lufthansa City Airlines would take delivery of the 40 A220-300s.
