Today, Fiji Airways shared that it will become a full member of the oneworld Alliance. The Southern Pacific airline has been a oneworld connect partner since 2018. However, it has now stepped up its association with the ‘Big Three’ alliance.
A natural move
The membership was announced at the IATA AGM in Dubai, UAE, this morning. During a press conference Simple Flying attended, Robert Isom, American Airlines chief executive officer oneworld alliance Chairman, highlighted that the organization’s relationship with Fiji Airways has been highly successful over the past five years. He added that the pair will continue to grow together with award-winning services and accelerated connections.
Amid oneworld’s 25-year anniversary, Isom concluded:
“We’re very proud of the great progress oneworld has made during the last 25 years, and I’m confident that the next 25 years will bring even greater benefits for our customers and our amazing people.”
oneworld has been making robust progress in adding to its family. At the IATA AGM 2022, which was hosted in Doha, Qatar, it was officially announced that Oman Air would join the alliance. The Middle Eastern airline is expected to finalize its membership in the second quarter of this year, becoming the 14th member. Sticking with the IATA AGM theme, oneworld took the opportunity to keep the momentum going, adding a 15th operator to the fold.

Better connected
This membership will undoubtedly give more travel options for FIji Airways passengers. As a core operator in the Pacific region, fliers on both sides of the ocean will benefit from seamless connections across oneworld’s expansive network.
Across APAC countries, there will be increased value for those flying with the likes of Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Qantas. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ocean, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which joined oneworld only in 2021, will be delighted with the move.

Altogether, oneworld’s network spans more than 900 destinations in 170 territories. The alliance offers passengers access to hundreds of lounges globally while providing unique privileges and rewards for frequent fliers, including fast-track security and extra baggage. There are, of course, point-building opportunities for passengers flying on partner airlines. oneworld’s other carriers, including British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, Royal Air Maroc, and SriLankan, have also welcomed the announcement.
Partnerships have been crucial during the post-pandemic recovery period, allowing passengers to seamlessly connect across the continents during challenging periods within the industry. As the market continues to grow, airlines are keen to optimize their relationships and expand their networks. As such, it won’t be a surprise to hear of further additions to airline alliances in the coming months.
