Finnair
and American Airlines have officially announced their Mexican codeshare agreement, which includes one fewer route than on its original Department of Transportation (DOT) application in November 2024.

Expanding codeshare to Dallas to Mexico routes

On January 13, Finnair announced that its codeshare agreement with American Airlines, which begins on January 23, will cover 12 Mexican destinations from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
(DFW).

The Finnish carrier pointed out that Dallas is an important destination in its network and the home hub for American Airlines. During the current winter season, Finnair has been operating up to daily flights between Helsinki Airport (HEL) and Dallas, with the carrier offering 11 weekly flights during the summer months in 2025.

Fredrik Wildtgrube, the Senior Vice President of Alliances and Airline Partnerships at Finnair, said that the expanded codeshare agreement with its oneworld partner would result in more choices for its passengers looking to fly to Mexico. The country is becoming an ever more popular destination from Finland and Northern Europe, especially during the winter months, Wildtgrube added.

“Besides Mexico, American Airlines offers our customers excellent connections via Dallas also to elsewhere in the United States and America.”

Anmol Bhargava, the Vice President of Partnerships at American Airlines
, added that the carrier was happy to offer Finnair’s customers better access to popular leisure destinations in Mexico. The upgraded codeshare agreement will provide more convenient connection times, according to Bhargava.

Removing Tampico from the agreement

However, the newly announced codeshare routes from Dallas to Mexico have one fewer destination compared to the airlines’ application with the DOT
in November 2024. Then, the pair applied to introduce codeshare services no later than 30 days following the notice to the Department, with the services being in the public interest and entirely consistent with the Air Transport Agreement between the US and Mexico.

The filing indicated 13 routes from Dallas to Mexico, including Mexico City International Airport Benito Juárez
(MEX). The announcement on January 13 pointed out that the codeshare agreement would be valid for 12 destinations in Mexico, which does not include Tampico General Francisco Javier Mina International Airport (TAM), serving Tampico, located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Data from the aviation analytics company Cirium‘s Diio Mi airline planning system showed that American Airlines has planned daily flights from Dallas to Tampico between March and October.

United Airlines
is the only other US-based airline to offer flights to Tampico, which has a year-round schedule to the Mexican city from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport
(IAH), increasing to double daily between April and October.

Expanding services to Dallas

Finnair, which joined oneworld
in September 1999 following a formal invitation in December 1998, began serving Dallas from its Helsinki hub in April 2022. Before that, the Finnish carrier had never flown to the Texan city. In May 2024, Finnair said that it would add frequencies on its flights to Dallas, making it a year-round daily service starting with the winter season in 2024 and 2025.

Finnair has also updated its winter 2024 traffic programme, adding frequencies to Dallas, making it a year-round daily service. Finnair’s Dallas flights offer smooth connections to American Airlines’ extensive network out of their Dallas hub.”

According to Cirium’s Diio Mi, until April 2024, Finnair operated up to four weekly flights to Dallas, subsequently increasing the number of itineraries to up to six. Daily services are scheduled to begin in March and will continue until at least December, Diio Mi data showed.

Finnair has no scheduled services to Mexico in 2025, having last served Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) in February 2019.
