has formally requested permission to start operations on a new route connecting El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá, Colombia, with Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to the Civil Aeronautics Authority of Colombia (Aerocivil). If the request is approved, this new service would mark Frontier’s first venture into South America, with Bogotá becoming its inaugural destination on the continent. Argentina-based aviation news website Aviacionline reported.
Frontier intends to use Airbus A320neo
and Airbus A321neo
aircraft to conduct twice-weekly flights on the San Juan – Bogotá route, based on the material that was presented to Aerocivil. Ishrion Aviation also shared the information on social media.
New service marks Frontier’s first expansion into South America
has always controlled the very competitive air travel market between Puerto Rico and Colombia, but the move is set to diversify it. Currently, the Colombian airline uses Airbus A320 aircraft to provide 10 weekly flights between Bogotá and San Juan, according to Aviacionline. The competition in the area further increased when low-cost airline JetBlue
started operating flights between San Juan and Medellin International Airport
in October 2024. Frontier will be able to immediately challenge Avianca’s long-standing supremacy on the route.

Frontier strengthens Caribbean hub
According to Frontier’s website, the airline has made San Juan a significant hub by offering flights to 15 cities in the US and nine more in the Caribbean from the city. Among these are well-known locations like Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, and St. Thomas, which established Frontier as a major force in the Caribbean and American markets. By entering a market with a high demand for reasonably priced international flights, the proposed Bogotá route will increase Frontier’s footprint in the area.

Frontier’s growth plan also enters a new phase with the entry into Bogotá, as the airline continues to link underserved markets and expand its network. Given the significance of Bogotá as a major South American commercial and tourism hub, the inclusion of this route is particularly noteworthy. By improving accessibility and giving passengers additional travel alternatives, the route may promote more commercial and tourist ties between Puerto Rico and Colombia, which would be advantageous to both countries’ economies.
