Hawaiian Airlines has operated its first-ever commercial flight with its Boeing 787-9, registered as N781HA. The airline welcomed guests to the inaugural journey with the type with fresh lei and treated them to live music and hula by the Hawaiian Airlines Serenaders.
Departing to San Francisco
Boeing 787-9 operated its first flight on April 16, departing Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Since entering service, the airline has exclusively used the aircraft on flights HA12/HA11 to connect the two cities.

The aircraft, named Kapuahi, was unveiled in February after the airline took delivery on February 14. During the inauguration ceremony on February 23, Peter Ingram, the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Hawaiian Airlines, said that the delivery day was a long time coming, adding that February 23 marked six years to the day when the airline decided to introduce the type as its flagship aircraft.
“Mahalo to Boeing for working collaboratively with us as we adjusted the delivery schedule and to our entire 787-9 team for managing our project and getting our first aircraft to its new home here in Honolulu.”

Switching to Los Angeles and Phoenix-bound flights
According to the airline, as soon as its second Boeing 787-9, registered N780HA, enters service, its first 787-9 will begin flying between HNL and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on flight HA2/HA3. It will also operate from HNL to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) on May 14 and 15. The latter itinerary, flight HA36/HA35, is currently operated by Airbus A330-200.
Speaking about the inaugural Boeing 787-9 flight, Ingram said that it marked an incredible achievement for everyone at Hawaiian Airlines, adding that the carrier’s 787-9 is a true flagship aircraft. Paired with the award-winning hospitality of the airline’s crew, the CEO promised that customers would receive an “unforgettable Hawaiʻi travel experience.”

A dozen Boeing 787s
The airline has a total of 12 Boeing 787-9 on order, having taken delivery of N780HA last week. According to Flightradar24 data, N780HA, which flew for the first time in June 2021, traveled from Seattle Paine Field International Airport (PAE) to HNL on April 11.

Three more Boeing 787-9 aircraft are scheduled to join the airline’s fleet in 2024, with other deliveries taking place through 2027. The Boeing jets will be replacing Hawaiian Airlines’ aging Airbus A330-200 aircraft, of which it has 24, with an average age of 10.9 years, according to ch-aviation data.
