The type didn’t sell nearly as well as the 737-900ER.

In March, Boeing released a statement revealing that American Airlines had ordered more than 150 B-737s. The carrier will modernize its global fleet with its first order for the largest Boeing 737 MAX. The airline is committing to 115 of the 737–10 models, including a new order for 85 jets and a conversion of a previous order for 30 737-8, the smaller variant. The airline is also announcing options to purchase 75 additional 737–10 jets. Airlines often get great discounts when purchasing aircraft in bulk. The discount could be up to 50%.

“We deeply appreciate American Airlines’ trust in Boeing and its confidence in the 737 MAX family. American’s selection of the 737-10 will provide even greater efficiency, commonality and flexibility for its global network and operations,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Our team here at Boeing is committed to delivering on this new order and supporting American’s strategic growth with one of the industry’s largest and most modern fleets.”

Boeing 737 History

In February 1968, Germany’s Lufthansa became the first non-US-based airline to launch the Boeing aircraft. Since the B-737 has been in production for four generations, each has several variants serving different airline requirements.

The rivalry between Boeing and Airbus has been fierce for many years. Between 2003 and 2018, both companies received a similar number of orders. This changed drastically in 2019. According to Statista, Airbus received five times the number of orders during that time period compared to Boeing.

The Airbus 320neo gave better fuel and operating efficiency compared to Boeing’s 737. In response, Boeing promptly redesigned the B-737 MAX, incorporating improved engines and performance. The balance between ensuring complete safety and minimizing costs was not maintained.

After the tragic accidents of Lion Air Flight 610 in October 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in March 2019, the 737 MAX was suspended from operation until the causes of the incidents were determined and addressed. The investigation revealed that the aircraft’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) was the cause behind the crashes, and as a result, the 737 MAX remained grounded for 20 months.

Boeing shares,

“The Next-Generation 737 provides our airline customers with superior reliability, fuel efficiency and high-value returns operators require in today’s competitive market. We will continue to provide this level of performance and quality as we transition to the 737 MAX. The popularity of the Next-Generation 737, combined with new innovation, launched our 737 MAX Family. With more than 5,000 orders, the 737 MAX is the fastest-selling airplane in Boeing’s history.

The 737 MAX delivers enhanced efficiency, improved environmental performance and increased passenger comfort to the single-aisle market. Incorporating advanced technology winglets and efficient engines, the 737 MAX offers excellent economics, reducing fuel use and emissions by 20 percent while producing a 50 percent smaller noise footprint than the airplanes it replaces. Additionally, 737 MAX offers up to 14 percent lower airframe maintenance costs than the competition. Passengers will enjoy the Boeing Sky Interior, highlighted by modern sculpted sidewalls and window reveals, LED lighting that enhances the sense of spaciousness and larger pivoting overhead storage bins.”

Since its launch in 1967, the Boeing 737 has undergone a journey of continuous evolution, establishing itself as one of the most iconic aircraft in Boeing’s portfolio. With nearly six decades of service, the Boeing 737 series has been celebrated for featuring a broad spectrum of enhancements and a diverse range of variants designed to meet the demands of the aviation industry.

This adaptability allowed the aircraft to remain relevant and highly sought after in the competitive market. Interestingly, the market for second-hand Boeing 737s has become increasingly accessible, with prices for some models dropping to under $2 million. This affordability opens up opportunities for a wider range of airlines and private operators to include this aircraft in their fleets.
