India Energy Week 2027 Curtain Raiser in Kolkata: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Says India’s Energy Resilience Built Before Crisis – Indian PSU
India has demonstrated that energy security is not simply about securing supplies but about building resilience well before a crisis strikes, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday while addressing the curtain-raiser of India Energy Week 2027 in Kolkata.
Addressing the gathering ahead of the fifth edition of India Energy Week, Puri said India had managed to shield domestic consumers from global energy disruptions despite significant pressures on international energy flows.
“Energy resilience is not built when a crisis arrives; it is built before the crisis arrives,” Puri said, highlighting the role of diversified energy supplies, expanded refining capacity, stronger infrastructure, storage and policy measures in strengthening India’s energy security.
The Minister said recent disruptions in global energy flows had demonstrated the importance of preparedness and resilience. India, he said, was strengthening this architecture further through initiatives including Samudra Manthan, GOBARdhan and expansion of piped natural gas.
IEW 2027 to be Bigger
Puri also indicated that India Energy Week 2027 is expected to be substantially larger in scale, with around 17,000 square metres of exhibition space already booked, nearly five months before the event.
The Minister pointed to the rapid growth of the platform. According to figures cited by him, India Energy Week in 2023 brought together more than 35,000 participants, 326 exhibitors and 60 sessions. By 2026, participation had risen to around 75,000, with 700 exhibitors, 100 conferences, 120 conference sessions and 550 global expert speakers, representing more than 120 countries.
The 2027 edition is scheduled from January 28 to 31, 2027, at the New Town Convention Centre in Kolkata. The official event platform describes IEW 2027 as a global meeting point for energy leaders, policymakers and innovators working towards a secure, affordable and sustainable energy future.
India Moving Beyond the Role of Energy Consumer
Puri said India was increasingly moving beyond the role of being merely a large energy-consuming economy and was contributing to the global conversation on the future of energy.
“We are demonstrating that growth, energy security and decarbonisation can advance together,” he said, adding that India was increasingly being viewed as a partner in shaping the future of energy.
The message assumes particular significance as India continues to balance rising energy demand with its transition towards cleaner fuels and technologies.
IEW 2027 will focus on innovation, energy security and the future of the energy system, bringing together governments, global energy companies, investors, technology providers and policymakers. The official IEW programme highlights areas including renewables, hydrogen, biofuels, LNG, energy storage, artificial intelligence and next-generation clean technologies.
Kolkata Emerges as New Energy Hub for Global Dialogue
The decision to host the fifth edition in Kolkata gives the eastern region a prominent place on India’s global energy map. It will also take India Energy Week beyond its recent Goa editions.
The event’s official website says IEW 2027 will bring together more than 75,000 energy professionals and 700-plus international exhibitors, with senior decision-makers participating across the global energy value chain.
For the energy industry, the Kolkata edition is expected to provide a platform for discussions around energy security, affordability, technology, investment and the transition towards lower-carbon energy systems.
Puri’s curtain-raiser address has therefore set the tone for an edition that will seek to combine India’s expanding energy requirements with its ambition to play a larger role in shaping the global energy landscape.
