India has achieved a historic milestone in its clean energy journey, with combined solar and wind power generation crossing the 100 gigawatt (GW) mark for the first time on the national power grid. The landmark achievement, recorded on July 13, marks a significant step towards India’s ambitious renewable energy and decarbonisation goals.

According to data from the Grid Controller of India Ltd. (GRID-INDIA), solar and wind power generation reached a record 103.7 GW at 12:05 PM IST on July 13, while the share of variable renewable energy (VRE) in the country’s electricity supply touched an all-time high of 42.79% at 12:29 PM the same day.

The momentum continued over the next two days, with renewable generation peaking at 102.42 GW on July 14 and 100.9 GW on July 15, demonstrating the growing capability of India’s power grid to accommodate large volumes of renewable electricity.

Record Renewable Share in India’s Power Supply

The achievement represents a watershed moment for India’s energy transition. For the first time, renewable energy sources are contributing a substantial share of the nation’s electricity demand while maintaining grid stability.

Experts note that India’s grid has successfully absorbed more than 100 GW of renewable power without any operational disruptions, highlighting years of investment in renewable generation, transmission infrastructure, advanced forecasting systems, and grid management technologies.

The record 42.79% contribution from solar and wind reflects the increasing role of renewable energy in meeting the country’s electricity demand, reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuel-based generation.

Storage and Grid Flexibility Become the Next Priority

While celebrating the milestone, energy experts emphasised that the next phase of India’s renewable energy transition will require significant investments in energy storage, transmission infrastructure, and grid flexibility.

Battery storage systems, pumped hydro projects, and flexible power markets will play a crucial role in ensuring round-the-clock availability of renewable energy and minimising power curtailment caused by fluctuations in solar and wind generation.

As renewable installations continue to expand, strengthening interstate transmission networks and deploying innovative electricity market mechanisms will become essential for integrating even larger volumes of clean power into the national grid.

Renewable Energy Supports Record Summer Electricity Demand

India’s renewable energy sector has played a vital role in meeting unprecedented electricity demand during the summer months.

This year, severe heatwaves coupled with rising cooling requirements pushed the country’s electricity demand to an all-time high of 270 GW on two occasions.

On April 25, when electricity demand touched the record 270 GW, solar power contributed 57 GW during peak demand hours and an unprecedented 81 GW during midday, helping reduce dependence on conventional thermal generation.

Since April, renewable energy has consistently supplied between 35% and 42% of India’s electricity demand during daylight hours.

When hydroelectric and nuclear power are included, non-fossil fuel sources have accounted for nearly 50% of the country’s total electricity supply, underscoring India’s progress toward its climate commitments.

India Has 288 GW Renewable Capacity

India currently possesses approximately 288 GW of installed renewable energy capacity, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets.

However, experts point out that not all installed renewable capacity can supply electricity simultaneously due to geographical differences between generation sites and electricity demand centres. In addition, the variable nature of solar and wind generation requires enhanced balancing mechanisms to maintain grid reliability.

As renewable energy increasingly becomes the backbone of India’s electricity system rather than merely supplementing conventional generation, accelerating investments in storage technologies, transmission corridors, and grid modernisation will be critical.

India Emerging as a Global Clean Energy Leader

The successful integration of over 100 GW of renewable power into the national grid demonstrates India’s growing leadership in balancing energy security, affordability, and decarbonisation.

The achievement reflects sustained investments in renewable energy infrastructure, transmission systems, forecasting technologies, and efficient grid operations over the past decade.

As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, milestones such as these reinforce confidence that the country’s clean energy transition is becoming a global benchmark for rapidly growing economies seeking sustainable development.
