  • ITA Airways is increasing Rome-Tokyo flights to daily service to meet strong market demand.
  • Its international expansion plans include new routes to North America, Africa, and the Middle East.
  • The airline has also signed codeshare partnerships with All Nippon Airways and Aeromexico this year for more connectivity options.

With global airlines soon switching to summer schedule, several new routes and additional frequencies will become available to travelers. One such change has been announced by Italy’s ITA Airways, which will up its frequency between Rome and Tokyo to a daily service.

Daily Rome-Tokyo flight

Passengers flying from Rome–Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) will have more connectivity, with ITA Airways adding two additional frequencies to its service starting this month.

The flight was inaugurated at the end of 2022 and recorded excellent load factors in 2023. After observing a strong demand in the market for flights between the two cities, ITA has offered a daily connection for its summer season, catering to both business and leisure traffic.

The flight from Tokyo will depart at 00:25 and arrive in Rome Fiumicino at 20.10 (local time). From Rome, the service has a departure time of 14:55 and lands in Tokyo at 10.25 (local time) the following day. Currently, ITA Airways is the only airline offering non-stop scheduled service between the two airports.

In January, the carrier also entered into a codeshare partnership with Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA), allowing passengers to fly to their destination with a single ticket and explore more destinations and connections from their respective hubs in Tokyo and Rome.

International expansion

ITA has extensive long-haul expansion plans this summer and has announced several new routes as it continues expanding its presence globally. It has new flights planned to North America, Africa and the Middle East from its hub at Rome Fiumicino.

In April, it will launch a non-stop service to Chicago, and the following month, flights to Toronto and Riyadh will start. In June, the carrier will start flying to Accra and Kuwait City, in July to Dakar, and in August to Jeddah.

ITA is also one of the carriers that has started flying to Tel Aviv. It resumed its service to Israel on March 1 and noted that the service has a planned ramp-up further into the summer. The airline uses its Airbus A320 aircraft on the route with three weekly flights on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

ITA already operates long-haul flights to destinations such as New York, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, Washington, San Francisco, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Tokyo and New Delhi.

Other developments

The carrier has a fleet of 52 aircraft that operate to 57 destinations, including 16 domestic, 26 international, and 15 intercontinental. Recently, it received funding to acquire its first owned jet, securing more than $85 million for an Airbus A330-900 aircraft.
