Marc Minkowski has been appointed as the next artistic director of Boston Baroque, marking a significant transition for the oldest period-instrument orchestra in North America. Minkowski will succeed the ensemble’s founder, Martin Pearlman, who has led the organisation since its inception in 1973.
A transition in leadership
The appointment follows a global search for a successor capable of maintaining the ensemble’s historical rigour while expanding its international profile. Minkowski, widely recognised for founding Les Musiciens du Louvre, brings decades of experience in the baroque and classical repertoires, as well as a prolific discography that has shaped modern historically informed performance.
Pearlman is expected to take on a laureate role, ensuring institutional continuity as Minkowski begins his tenure. The shift comes at a time when Boston Baroque is increasing its digital presence and global streaming reach.
Professional background
The conductor’s career has been defined by both critical acclaim and complex administrative tenures. During his time as general director of the Opéra National de Bordeaux, his leadership was met with public friction from members of the resident orchestra. The conflict led to a public letter of support signed by over 70 international musicians and singers—including Natalie Dessay and Rolando Villazón—who defended his musical contributions and collaborative spirit during rehearsals.
Despite these past institutional tensions, Minkowski has remained a sought-after figure in the early music community. His arrival in Boston is anticipated to bring a particular focus on French baroque works and large-scale operatic productions, areas where he has previously garnered acclaim at major houses such as the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna State Opera.
Future directions
The upcoming season is expected to feature a mix of core Handel and Bach masterworks alongside rarer staged projects, reflecting Minkowski’s background in both orchestral and theatrical conducting. Further details regarding his inaugural programme and specific contract length are to be released by the board in the coming weeks.
