MNRE Cracks Down on 66 PM Surya Ghar Vendors Over Pending Solar Applications – Indian PSU
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has deactivated 66 registered vendors under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for one month after finding a substantial backlog of pending rooftop solar applications.
The ministry has directed the affected vendors to clear their pending applications within 30 days, warning that failure to improve their performance could result in an extension of the deactivation.
According to an MNRE notice, an analysis of data available on the PM Surya Ghar portal found that several registered vendors had accumulated a disproportionately high number of applications marked “Agreement Uploaded” during the April-June 2026 quarter.
The ministry said the number of such pending applications was significantly higher than the vendors’ demonstrated installation capacity.
MNRE has termed the accumulation of applications as “artificial hoarding”, stating that such practices can restrict consumer choice and potentially delay the disbursement of government subsidies.
Vendors Barred From Taking New Applications
The 66 vendors identified by MNRE have been placed under immediate one-month deactivation based on their pending application numbers and projected completion timelines.
During the deactivation period, these vendors will not be permitted to accept new consumer applications. They will also be removed from the vendor-selection page through which consumers choose rooftop solar installers.
However, their access to the PM Surya Ghar portal will remain active. This will allow them to complete installations against applications they have already accepted.
30-Day Window to Improve Performance
MNRE has provided the deactivated vendors with a 30-day opportunity to improve their performance and bring their pending applications within acceptable scheme timelines.
Vendors that successfully reduce their delivery pendency to acceptable levels during this period can be reactivated.
Those that fail to demonstrate adequate improvement, however, could face an extension of the deactivation, according to the ministry.
Vendors Advised Against Holding Applications
The ministry has also advised registered vendors not to retain consumer applications for more than 60 days without valid reasons.
Vendors have been instructed to accept applications in accordance with their actual execution and installation capacity rather than accumulating applications that they may not be able to service within the prescribed timelines.
The action comes at a crucial stage of the PM Surya Ghar scheme, with less than nine months remaining before its scheduled conclusion.
By taking action against vendors with large backlogs, MNRE is seeking to put greater emphasis on timely execution and ensure that consumers who have already entered into agreements with vendors receive their rooftop solar systems within a reasonable timeframe.
The move also signals closer scrutiny of vendor performance as the government works to accelerate rooftop solar installations and prevent delays in subsidy-linked projects under the PM Surya Ghar programme.
